The
Indian Papoose was shipped to the USA and rebadged with
the Indian marquee shield called
the "
Papoose".
The little motorcycle was actually a
Corgi built
by Brockhouse
Engineering (Southport) Ltd., and was an Welbike
inspired styled motorcycle.
Sold here in the USA from 1947 to 1955 even after Indian
bankrupt, sold all the way up into the year 1954.
The bike stoped production in Oct of 1954.
The "
Papoose"
was actully an Corgi model Mark-I motorcycle
with the indian label.
27,050 bikes were made by Brockhouse from 1947 to oct 1954 but how
many were actual Indian branded "
Papoose"
not sure?.
The little
Papoose also
had sidecars available built by Brockhouse,
KVP, Feridax and Vodac.
The Welbike was
built from 1942 to 1948 by Excelsior
of England for the British Armed Forces to be used by air commandos
and paratroopers. Excelsior of Tysley,
Birmingham England.
This tiny folding motorcycle designed to be dropped by parachute for
use by British Special Forces.
The United States and Germany both built Excelsior
motorcycles but were not related to the Excelsior
of England.
Many of the small bikes Welbike,Corgi
and
Indian Papoose
get parted together as some piece fit one another.
And the Rare Welbike
is so hard to find alot of fakes are poping up from people using Corgi
parts and JDL engines off of old autocycles to make replicas and are
passing them off as real Welbikes.
